Last summer, I got really tired of my kids asking me a hundred times a day what fun thing were doing that day (to be perfectly honest.) So this summer, I decided to make a cute little sign to hang in the kitchen letting them know what we were planning for the day. I try to do one extra “fun” thing a day, apart from our normal routine, so that’s what goes on the board.
I went to the craft store and got an oval shaped unfinished wood piece with a rope hanger and chalkboard paint (here’s a tip – the cap matches the paint color. I realized that after I bought it. I’m smart like that.) I already had on hand – ribbon, Cricut die cut machine/Cartridge, and paper for cutting the words/shapes.
To get started, I went outside to spray paint the wood and started to spray it -- BLAST!! IT’S GREEN!!! That’s when I noticed the cap color. Don’t do that. Pay attention at the craft store and buy the right stuff. Also, don’t go with four boys. It won’t end well.
So, after my hubby got home, I went back to the store, exchanged it for black (the last can! There was like 10 cans of the green. Hhmm, I wonder why?) Anyway, it took about 4 coats of paint to cover it. Note – if you’re going to keep the attached rope, then tape it off. I knew I was going to change it out for ribbon so I didn’t worry about it.
I let it dry over night and then rubbed chalk all over it and wiped it off a few times. (This “cures” the paint. I read that on-line.) :)
I pulled off the old rope and used it as a rough guide for how long I needed to cut my ribbon. Both orange and green were used, I just layed them on top of each other and stapled them to the back using an electric staple gun.
For decorating the board, I used my Cricut and the Mickey Mouse font cartridge for the words and Accent Essentials for the sun. I attached them with glue and added glitter to the sun (I love bling!)
I’m not a big fan of using regular chalk but I love the look of it so my solution is chalk markers! Have you guys ever used these things? They’re AMAZING! They come out as an opaque liquid and dry looking just like chalk. I love them! (You can tell the difference in the word "summer" above which was written with regular chalk, and the words "Movie Night" written below.)
Now my kiddos have a cute reminder of what we’re doing each day. Plus, my oldest son loves writing it on there in the morning and reading it to the younger ones. And if the little ones (who can’t read) forget what we’re doing, they can ask their brother instead of me. ;)
